Strategy and Communications sits at the centre of the organisation, bringing together several teams with organisation-wide remits and mutual collaboration opportunities.
The work of the directorate’s teams includes delivery of major events, designing and leading public affairs or marketing campaigns, providing data, evidence and analysis, leading cross-organisational programmes, to making sure we plan for and can respond to emerging events or emergencies in our city.
About the teams
The Public Affairs and Strategic Partnerships (PASP) and International Relations (IR) teams are focused on strengthening partnerships for the GLA across London and Internationally. From government departments, local government and international organisations, to other global cities, the diplomatic corp, voluntary sector and businesses. We support the Mayor and the GLA by building intelligence, advocating for Londoners and bringing people together to solve some of the most difficult challenges facing the city.
From supporting the Mayor’s meetings with Secretaries of State, International political leaders and Ambassadors, convening London’s leaders through the London Partnership Board and advocating for London on some of the biggest issues of the moment like devolution – no two days are the same in our teams.
About the role
We’re expanding the teams to help respond to the significant increase in engagement with central government and international organisations in the last year. We are looking for someone to help us help teams across the GLA to achieve their ambitions through relationship building, policy influencing and advocacy. You’ll need an interest in international, parliamentary and public affairs, experience of developing and managing processes to support effective teams, and a willingness to get involved.
This role will support both teams, working with colleagues to ensure we respond effectively to enquiries from key stakeholders, supporting policy teams to advance their engagement activities, keeping track of the contacts we make, and getting involved in planning projects, events and briefings of key meetings.
What your day will look like
No two days are the same in PASP and International Relations, but some of the things you can expect to work on will be:
- Supporting the teams to respond to correspondence from key stakeholders
- Organising meetings and events and helping colleagues to prepare briefings for the Mayor, Deputy Mayors and other GLA senior staff
- Managing budgets, procurement and other financial processes and;
- Supporting the management team of PASP and International Relations
- Supporting the development of London’s Missions and the smooth running of the London Partnership Board
- Supporting the delivery of international visits by the Mayor, Deputy Mayors and other GLA senior staff, including researching and booking international travel
- Establishing and managing key processes within the teams to ensure records and contacts are kept up to date
Skills, knowledge and experience
To be considered for the role you must meet the following essential criteria:
- Strong organisational and planning skills including experience of operating in highly pressured and complex environments
- Good written and verbal communication skills appropriate to communicate with a range of senior stakeholders
- Evidence of establishing or managing processes within a team
- Basic understanding of, and interest in, the structures of central and local Government and international affairs
