Policy and Programme Manager (Circular Economy and Waste)

The GLA Environment team are currently recruiting for an experienced Policy and Programme Manager who can develop cutting edge waste policy and deliver a multi-million pound plastic bottle reduction and water refill programme.

The Mayor of London’s draft London Environment Strategy set out his ambition for London to become one of the greenest cities ever. At the centre of this ambition is his commitment to make London a zero waste city by 2026 and a zero carbon city by 2050. The Mayor wants London to be at the forefront of reducing waste including plastic waste and to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. The Mayor also wants London to recycle as much of the waste it cannot prevent with the aim of recycling 65% municipal waste by 2030.

The role holder will manage the dedicated Circular Economy and Waste policy team. The team will lead the development and delivery of the research, policy and programmes required to achieve the Mayors waste targets, manage the relationship between the Greater London Authority and the London Waste and Recycling Board and identify new funding sources to enable its delivery in London. This will include:

  • developing and delivering a London wide major plastic bottle reduction and water refill programme,
  • ensuring London’s waste collection and disposal authorities are in general conformity with the waste provisions of the London Environment Strategy,
  • ensuring planning applications deliver the waste policies in the London Plan,
  • ensuring circular economy principles are embedded in GLA family activities and planning applications; as well as
  • managing the delivery of the Mayor’s Entrepreneur programme.
