Senior Policy and Programme Officer – Environment Team

London is one of the greenest cities in the world. The environmental, social and economic benefits of the capital’s green infrastructure are wide ranging. As a growing city, the capital faces increasing challenges to provide the scale of housing and infrastructure services needed as well as improving Londoners’ wellbeing and prosperity. Climate change will increase these pressures, making flooding more frequent and severe, threatening water resources, increase the risk of overheating and create significant challenges for the planning, design and management of green infrastructure.

The Mayor recognises these challenges and through his London Environment Strategy has committed to:

  • confirm London as a National Park City, protect the Green Belt, improve green spaces, green the built environment and establish a Green Spaces Commission to help secure a financially sustainable future for London’s parks and green spaces.
  • make London more resilient to severe weather and climate impacts including implementing a strategic approach to the planning and management of London’s green infrastructure.
  • reduce the risk and impacts of flooding and heat events and ensure London has efficient, secure and affordable water resources.

This Senior Policy and Programme Officer position in the GLA’s Environment Unit will be involved in implementing the climate adaptation, green infrastructure and natural environment proposals in the London Environment Strategy. This will include:

  • building partnerships with key stakeholders and supporting the development and implementation of relevant policies on green infrastructure, climate adaptation and the management of water resources in the new London Plan;
  • supporting the work of the London Green Spaces Commission;
  • co-ordinating the use of data and GIS to support green infrastructure and climate adaptation;
  • providing policy analysis and project support on the natural environment, integrated water management, water resources and water quality projects.
