Major Sports Event Officer

The success of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has cemented London’s position as one of the leading global cities for hosting major sporting events. The Mayor of London has made clear his ambition for London to be the undisputed sporting capital of the world by luring even more global sports events to the capital.

The Greater London Authority’s major sports events framework, ‘London: Home of World Class Sport’, formalises a London-wide partnership approach for bidding for and supporting major sporting events. It establishes the Mayor’s Office as the strategic lead for major sporting events in the city and the first point of contact for anyone looking to bring their event to London.

The GLA Sports Team is responsible for managing the GLA’s stake in major sports events in London, and building and maintaining relationships with: events; national governing bodies of sport; international sports federations; venue owners; and key government stakeholders.

The GLA is seeking to recruit an experienced project officer to manage and coordinate the GLA’s involvement in a portfolio of international major sports events taking place in London and contribute towards delivery of the GLA’s major sports events strategy.

Candidates are required to demonstrate a successful track record of working on high profile projects and have experience of working in the events industry. A demonstrable understanding of the structure of London government and of how sport is managed and administered in London and nationally is also required.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, as well as working closely with teams across the GLA to ensure that London maximises the opportunity of hosting major sports events.
