What would you actually be doing?

In this role you will be managing a small project team, contributing to the delivery of the GLA’s Regeneration initiatives and the Mayor’s economic development ambitions.  The workload of the team is extremely varied and the successful candidate will be expected to work across a number of work streams. This post will lead on the team’s work on growth and investment for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises and start-up companies (SMEs), including:

-         The Mayor’s public-private venture capital fund, the London Co-Investment Fund, that supports young start-ups in the Science, Technology and Digital sectors;

-         Small scale targeted business interventions across London delivered through the Good Growth Fund;

-         Business support programmes in co-working spaces and cleantech clusters across London;

-         Work with European partners such as the Cities of Milan and The Hague to develop cross-national revolving investment products and frameworks with the aim of catalysing innovation and maintaining London’s position as the best place to do business in Europe;

What are we looking for?

We are seeking candidates with solid experience in, and a thorough understanding of:

  • London’s small businesses, in particular those in high growth and technology sectors, the challenges they face, and the support they need to grow;
  • London’s investment landscape, including Venture Capital, Debt and Equity Financing and Crowd funding;
  • Investment products and models of relevance in a public-sector arena, particularly the use of revolving financial instruments to deliver local infrastructure, SME growth, job creation and employment;
  • Managing multi-agency projects and programmes, including European Funded projects or programmes.

The ideal candidate will have initiative and drive, and the ability to prioritise a challenging work load.  As well as experience of delivering programmes or projects they will have the ability to analyse and interpret information to assess risk, brief decision makers and identify workable solutions to problems as they arise.

Experience of leading teams and delivery a portfolio of projects in a matrix management environment is also essential. As well as managing a small, highly motivated and experienced project team, you will be able to lead the development and delivery of your portfolio, providing strategic oversight of your area for your team, your peers in other teams, and senior managers.

Good communication and diplomatic skills are essential to develop effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders from a range of private and public sector organisations.  Working with European agencies during a period of significant change will require a high level of political awareness and an understanding of both domestic and European political pressures to ensure the best possible outcome for London and Londoners.
