Supervisory Economist - Appraisal and Evaluation

GLA Economics’ analysis and advice informs key investment decisions at the Greater London Authority (GLA).  The GLA requires high quality economic analysis and advice to ensure that the strategies we develop and the projects we deliver are based on sound evidence.  GLA Economics - part of the GLA’s Intelligence Unit - is also an information resource for anyone with an interest in London’s economy, including the capital’s academics, commentators and decision makers.

Bring your knowledge and passion for economics together with your ambition to maintain London’s global standing and you’ll play a key role in informing decisions that affect the lives of all Londoners.

We are now looking to fill a vacancy a supervisory economist leading GLA Economics’ work on appraisal and evaluation. The post has been regraded prior to the start of the current recruitment campaign to reflect an increase in responsibilities. We are looking for someone who is able to combine technical professional skills with the ability to play a strategic advisory and leadership role alongside the Senior Economist and the other supervisory economists. As post-holder you will:

  • Lead on providing advice on appraisal and evaluation of GLA’s policies, programmes and investments and on the development of indicator frameworks of economic performance.
  • Lead the on developing and disseminating best practice in appraisal and evaluation (in line with the Green Book, Magenta Book, Business Case guidance and other government guidance) across the organisation.
  • Lead in providing economic analysis and advice on selected priority activities/projects as instructed by the Senior Economist.
  • Contribute to the analytical assurance of GLA Economics’ outputs and publications.
  • Manage two economists working on appraisal and evaluation.

The policy and investment decisions you’ll work on are often complex.  However, with your clear, analytical approach you will be able to break down and structure complex issues and turn them into a manageable analytical problem, seeing it through to delivery.  You will also be able to engage confidently with relevant policy teams and lead analysts in particular areas and provide them with clear guidance and strategic advice.
